Cell-Chex®

Cell-Chex is a multi-level manual cerebrospinal and body fluid control for evaluating the accuracy and precision of hemacytometer RBC and WBC counts, urate and CPPD crystal identification and manual WBC differential procedures. Cell-Chex controls for red blood cell (RBC) and white blood cell (WBC) counts, urate and CPPD crystal identification and white blood cell differentiation. It is comprised of a patient-like mix of intact RBCs, urate and CPPD crystals and human white blood cells.

When stained in the same manner as a patient sample, Cell-Chex can be used to control for the differentiation of granulocyte, lymphocyte and monocyte populations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cell-Chex is a multi-level manual cerebrospinal and body fluid control for evaluating the accuracy and precision of hemacytometer RBC and WBC counts, urate and CPPD crystal identification and manual WBC differential procedures. It is comprised of a patient-like mix of intact RBCs, urate and CPPD crystals and human white blood cells.

Cell-Chex contains biconcave RBCs and five types of morphologically distinct WBCs. Stabilized cells are easy to differentiate and have morphology that is representative of fresh patient samples. Cell-Chex is also the only manual body fluid control that contains real CPPD and urate crystals for identification in synovial fluid samples.

Cell-Chex is available in three levels: Level 1-CC (CPPD Crystals) and Level 1-UC (Urate Crystals) have lower assayed cell counts, whereas Level 2 has higher assayed cell counts. This multi-level format allows laboratories to verify performance across the clinically relevant range of cell concentrations found in cerebrospinal and body fluid specimens.

Yes, Cell-Chex WBCs are stabilized human cells that can be used to control for the 5-part manual WBC differential. When stained in the same manner as patient samples, stabilized Cell-Chex WBC morphology resembles fresh patient WBCs, enabling accurate identification of granulocytes, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils.

Cell-Chex contains real CPPD crystals (Level 1-CC) and monosodium urate crystals (Level 1-UC) that can be accurately differentiated based on morphology and polarized light microscopy. This is the only commercially available manual body fluid control that includes crystals, making it essential for validating synovial fluid analysis procedures.

Cell-Chex offers 30-day open-vial stability and 6-month closed-vial stability. This extended shelf life reduces the number of shipments and associated costs while ensuring consistent quality control performance throughout the product’s life.

Cell-Chex contains stabilized human RBCs and WBCs that replicate actual patient samples, validating the entire cell qualification and quantification procedure. Unlike synthetic alternatives, stabilized human cells have the same optical characteristics and morphology as fresh patient cells, providing more realistic quality control that challenges the complete manual counting and identification workflow from sample preparation through final analysis.

Many accrediting agencies now require quality control for manual hemacytometer cell counts and differentials. Cell-Chex provides manufacturer-established assay values that ensure technical staff are performing testing accurately. Users also have access to STATS, Streck’s free interlaboratory quality control program for peer group data comparison, supporting compliance with quality assurance requirements.
