Sickle Cell Screening
Hemoglobin S and Sickle Cell
Sickle cell is a condition in which red blood cells become rigid and sickle shaped. Sickled cells have less oxygen carrying capability and may have a shorter life than normal blood. Not only does this condition impact patient health but also impacts facilities such as blood banks, which need to ensure their supply of normal blood. Screening for Hemoglobin S is an effective indicator that the blood carries the sickle cell trait.

Sickle Cell Screening at Your Fingertips
Globally, the number of individuals living with sickle cell disease is roughly 7.74 million, an increase of about 41% from 5.46 million in 2000.1 Having a screening test that does not require any instrumentation is critical, as sickle cell disease tends to impact less developed areas that have limited access to modern health care. Further, blood banks can benefit from effective testing that does not require any instrumentation.

Where QC Creates Value
To ensure the results of sickle cell screening, it is best practice to perform quality control to help ensure patient results that may be compromised during the test preparation process. Errors may occur during the reconstitution step, or the solution may have been compromised due to environmental factors.
