What Synthetic Controls Never See, and What Switching Controls Rarely Requires

Not every control faces the same process a real sample does — and that gap is where failures may hide. Synthetic controls introduce nucleic acid directly, skipping extraction. Controls made from intact organisms move through lysis, extraction, and amplification — the same steps a real sample takes — surfacing failure points like incomplete lysis and nucleic acid degradation that synthetic material never encounters. This session, presented by Chris Connelly, PhD, Senior Director of Streck’s Molecular Business Unit, also addresses a common concern: switching QC vendors. Using CAP and CLIA verification requirements as a guide, Connelly outlines what a transition actually requires — and what it doesn’t. The talk closes with a look at Streck’s pipeline, including work with IVD manufacturers and CAP proficiency testing programs.
